What began as a minor accolade in the 2010 edition of the Guide is now the most important event in our calendar. Thanks to your nominations, and the undercover work of our inspectors, our 100 Best Local Restaurants celebrate the very best of local dining in Britain today.

The towns and villages of East Anglia have more than proved their worth when it comes to vigorously supported local eating places, but our regional winner – the impressively revitalised Greyhound Inn, at Pettistree near Bury St Edmunds – easily stole the show. Here is a ‘proper boozer’ doling out ‘proper cooking’ based on fiercely local ingredients. First-class pub/restaurants are dotted around the region, and we’re also big fans of The Gin Trap Inn at Ringstead near Hunstanton, as well as The Plough at Bolnhurst – a reimagined Tudor hostelry out in the Bedfordshire Wolds, which is testament to the hard work of long-serving hosts Martin and Jayne Lee. Elsewhere, Fancett’s Bistro in Cambridge and L’Hexagone Bistro Français in Norwich are ample proof that everyone loves the comfort and reassurance of a traditional no-frills bistro. The region is packed with inspired possibilities for every palate and pocket, all dedicated to serving their local communities.

Will Orrock and Cassidy Hughes should be congratulated for striking the perfect balance between cosy local boozer and serious foodie destination. Classic country-pub good looks and top-notch food are a winning combination and we know from the glowing reports we receive that the cooking never disappoints. It’s a dead simple recipe for success, but so hard to get as right as this.

A Good Food Guide reader said:

'There is so much charm and history in this place. Every dish I've had here is unique and hits flavour palates that I didn't even know existed. Combine that with the amazing hospitality, and you've got a winning combo.'

Owners Will Orrock and Cassidy Hughes said of the award:

'We're absolutely over the moon to receive this award from The Good Food Guide! Here at the Greyhound Pettistree, we love making everyone feel at home, whether you’re popping in for a quiet pint of local ale at the bar, a simple lunch, or a celebratory feast. Our mission has always been to deliver a top-notch local pub experience, and we pour our heart and soul into it.'
