A welcoming proposition in Halesworth and a refreshingly honest inland antidote to the trendiness of coastal hot spots such as Southwold, this handsome venue boasts comfortable bedrooms upstairs and unconventional art on the walls. Just add bags of effervescent hospitality from hosts Tyler and Pauline Torrance. The food is hearty, generous stuff so come hungry. You might begin with celeriac soup or a venison ‘scrumpet’ with apricot and mustard purée before spoonably soft daube of beef or pork belly with mash, a puff of crackling and lush gravy. Order a simple Rioja from the short wine list, round off with some fine East Anglian cheeses, and retire well-fed and happy.
