Sushi Kyu
London, Soho - Japanese - Restaurant - £££
Friendly Soho sushi joint that's a cut above
London's sushi scene is such that one can struggle to find the sweet spot between a plastic tray of maki rolls from the supermarket and a three-figure omakase blow-out. Friendly little Sushi Kyu in Soho is pitched just right. It's somewhere to go for a solo chirashi don lunch (from around £25) or, on occasion, for a reasonably priced omakase experience. We sat around the wooden counter with a handful of solo diners – it’s that sort of place – and tried the full omakase (£70+), which includes an appetiser, eight pieces of nigiri sushi, a temaki roll, and dessert, across 11 mini courses. At lunch, a reduced version is available for around £50. The attention to detail is impressive: Scottish salmon sashimi with ponzu comes with its own pretty seaweed salad garnished with shiso flowers; French red mullet, meanwhile, is topped with a little shredded shiso. The wasabi? Fresh, of course. Nigiri can be classical (lean tuna, perhaps) or more creative (prawn...

The attention to detail is impressive: Scottish salmon sashimi with ponzu comes with its own pretty seaweed salad garnished with shiso flowers; French red mullet, meanwhile, is topped with a little shredded shiso. The wasabi? Fresh, of course. Nigiri can be classical (lean tuna, perhaps) or more creative (prawn with ikura and green chilli sauce). The care that goes into the preparation and presentation of each course is evident, and the quality is very high.
Diners can also piece together their own sushi selection including specials such as amberjack and sea urchin nigiri or sashimi. Drink sake by the glass, carafe or bottle – or go for the salaryman’s favourite, whisky and soda. It’s a light, simply appointed room, with a forbidding black door at the back marked ‘Karaoke’. Pass through it if you must.
