Opened back in 1992, Patricia Michelson’s much-loved and instantly captivating Marylebone cheese emporium/deli/café is now one of the capital’s little treasures with a temperature-controlled cheese room at the heart of things; here, ‘raw’ cheeses are ripened and matured under strict supervision. If you want to sample some of La Fromagerie’s treats, head to the café ‘at No 6’, where British, French and Italian cheeses come prettily arranged on wooden boards complete with homemade chutneys, honeys, quince paste and other accompaniments. The café is open from breakfast and brunch through to afternoon tea, with lunch dishes getting special attention. Cured meats, fried halloumi, wood-roasted artichokes, salads and toasted cheese sandwiches are backed up by bigger plates including the likes of sweetcorn chowder, vitello tonnato or Sardinian gnocchetti with aubergine, tomatoes and ricotta. If you crave something sweet, assorted homemade cakes and tarts fit the bill, along with ice creams, brownies and the like. It's normally walk-ins only at this Marylebone branch, but on Friday evenings there are special bookable feasts comprising cheese, charcuterie, wine and seasonal fare. Drinks include zesty aperitifs as well as a short list of European wines, with just about everything available by the glass.
