Best breakfast
Newly opened by Forge Bakehouse on Abbeydale Road, Mesters’ Social serves the best fry-up in Sheffield. A lovely little slab of crisp pork belly (instead of bacon), awesome locally sourced sausages, barbecue beans and deep-fried bubble and squeak – and proper crispy fried eggs, just how I like them. It’s delicious. Make sure you order a Bloody Kimchi, too; they use kimchi juice instead of tomato juice and it’s super tasty and good for you. It’s a slap around the face on a Sunday morning if you’re feeling it after a hard week.
Best coffee
You will get simply the best coffee in the city at Steam Yard on Division Street. It’s consistently good. This is where we go during the week for a coffee pit-stop.
Best brunch
Mesters’ Social cooks the best brunch I’ve had in Sheffield. The miso hollandaise on the eggs is fantastic.
Best lunch
The best lunch is to be found at Peppercorn Restaurant on Abbeydale Road – quality ingredients, cooked well without fuss by chef Charlie Curran.
Best place for food shopping
You can find pretty decent Asian food stores all over the city but Oisoi in the city centre and K H Oriental Foods are two of the best. Barra Organics is a great greengrocers on Sharrow Vale Road, Moss Valley Fine Meats sells the best pork sausages and bacon. Lawns Farm shop in Rotherham has a fabulous butchers and they do incredible pies, and Mr Pickles’ Yorkshire Food Emporium on Abbeydale Road is a wonderful store for getting locally sourced produce, always very fresh and high quality.
Quiet pint
The Beer Engine on Cemetery Road, serves a quality selection of drinks. It’s a well looked after pub and has a cosy little beer garden.
Family/children
The Milestone in Kelham Island has a nice family-style feel to it. It serves good pub-grub and is accessible for families when it comes to price, too.
Sunday lunch
The Broadfield Ale House on Abbeydale Road consistently knocks out a good selection of very tasty roasts.
Pre-dinner cocktails
INC roof bar in Kelham Island is the place for good cocktails, good vibes and good tunes. This place is a must in the summer when it’s nice and warm and the sun is out.
Dinner
No Name in Crookes is an awesome little bistro cooking decent, honest food with a bit of a twist. Chef Tom uses local produce, keeps things simple but very tasty. The menu changes daily, depending on what he can get his hands on and what’s best. Ashoka on Ecclesall Road is also a great restaurant, cooking classic Indian ingredients in modern-style dishes. Those guys have been smashing it since 1967!
Post-pub snack
Elif Kebab house on Ecclesall Road serves proper skewers cooked over coals with all breads and condiments made in house. This place is like heaven after a few beers.
Best-kept secret
Eve Kitchen is a tiny little café and shop tucked away in a back street but it sells the best handmade doughnuts for miles. Baker Lauren Eve is a one-woman army. She does everything herself and when the doughnuts are gone, they are gone.
If I could eat only one thing in Sheffield, it would have to be…
A pie at The Broadfield Ale House on Abbeydale Road – with loads of Henderson’s Relish and a pint, of course!
