With International Women’s Day on Friday 8th March, and to celebrate the restaurant’s 50th anniversary, where better to head this week than to Dartmouth and The Angel to chat with Elly Wentworth.
A year might pass, and North Tyneside will again appear in a ‘best places to live in the UK’ list in the national press. Locals read them with a smug, knowing smile, all the while hoping that it doesn’t make securing a dinner reservation any harder… or a pint any more costly.
The town has a proud maritime history going back centuries and some fabulous beaches but, as Mark Taylor discovers, it’s also putting the port on the culinary map with a growing reputation as a food and drink destination.
Cool, trendy Whitstable, with its pretty beach huts, fishermen’s cottages and working harbour, remains a magical spot. The Sportsman in nearby Seasalter established a beachhead almost 25 years ago, and Stephen Harris’s pioneering produce-first approach is still well worth the pilgrimage, but a table here requires planning ahead. For a more spur of the moment trip there are plenty of places to enjoy.
