Wright’s has a way of making you feel like you’re part of the club – it’s warm, homely and very cool, the kind of club you’d want to join, especially when you throw in the deli goods, the wines, and a menu focused on savouring this bounty. Everything is cooked with honesty, simplicity and a fondness for warming classics from Europe, the US and beyond. Typical savoury offerings include kedgeree (spiced basmati rice, smoked haddock and eggs) and Wright's classic take on pork Cubano (made with from Myrddin heritage belly and ham, Hafod Cheddar, pickles and sriracha mayonnaise in a home-baked ciabatta roll), as well as a verdant soup of British asparagus, leeks and peas with sprightly wild garlic pesto. Snacks and sides are more than an afterthought – try deep-fried aubergines with cumin, honey and labneh, the nicely crisped potato cakes with punchy aïoli, or simple salted Valencia almonds with salted roasted green peas. This is elevated café food with feisty flavours, all based on impeccably sourced ingredients. From the glorious dessert table come further treats – perhaps a nectarine and almond tart with Conti’s ice cream, mandarin cake with beguiling marmalade cream, or a simple, intense chocolate brownie with whipped cream. Wines – drawn from the in-house collection – are offered by the glass or carafe, and there’s a decent selection of Welsh beers and ciders too.
