Village Farm Café

Devon, East Portlemouth - Café

On the brow of East Portlemouth's hill, with the sweeping landscape of the Salcombe-Kingsbridge estuary below, this charming café is part of an artisan centre that embraces a campsite, smallholding, boat building and more besides. The kitchen makes productive use of the farm’s rare-breed pigs, Devon red cattle and organically grown vegetables for a seasonal menu of simple brunch and lunch dishes (plus all-day coffee and cake). Sourdough is baked on-site to go with soups, quiches and the likes of Salcombe smokies with horseradish crème fraîche, while deftly executed ideas including sausages with skordalia and braised greens keep locals and visitors coming back for more. Usefully, the café is open all year, and there's a beach kiosk at the ferry steps in the pipeline.

There simply aren't enough of these little gems across the country, it's really wonderful to find something so genuine in such a remote location. The menu is veg lead, and sustainability is a big factor, the sourdough bread is exceptional. The pasta was perfectly cooked and the smokies perfectly seasoned. There were nine of us that rambled in without a reservation and we were followed by a large group of women who apparently meet there often. We were served in a friendly timely manner and shown round the boat builders yard when we left. Simple stuff done simply isn't an easy ambition, but it was all well executed, the only improvement would be a glass of wine although the locally sourced ginger beer was great.
