One of a growing number of notable restaurants in York, the Rattle Owl has grown in ambition and confidence over the years and now stands alongside some of the best eateries in the city. In the kitchen, there's a strong commitment to sustainability and local produce, with seasonal ingredients sourced from the likes of Food Circle, an award-winning community venture that matches local producers and growers with chefs (and residents). The result is a tasting menu of nine courses (there's also a six-course option and a highly recommended three-course Sunday roast) that is not only exciting but also beautifully balanced. It begins with ‘snacks’, the highlight at a recent visit being a delicate mini cheese tart flecked with candied walnut; to follow, there might be a skilfully executed trout tartare, say, or a posh chicken ‘Kyiv’ stuffed with a wild garlic and chicken mousse, or even roast mutton with a Turkish spiced dressing. Throughout our meal, dishes were garnished and flavoured with foraged herbs and flowers such as salad burnet, sorrel, chervil, lilac, horseradish, wild garlic, pickled garlic heads and nettles, but applied with a light touch – just enough to enhance the dish and bring a welcome vivacity and originality. Rhubarb pavlova makes a splendid finale. The wine list is organic and sustainable; otherwise, there is a choice of two interesting wine pairings. Also check out the recently opened Tansy Beetle Bar for drinks and small plates.
