The Plough
Oxfordshire, Kelmscott - Modern British - Pub with rooms
Equally popular with locals and the throng of visitors who regularly descend on nearby Kelmscott Manor (the home of William Morris), this beautifully situated 17th-century village inn is also handy for the start of the Thames Path walking trail. Chef Olly Oakley, who also oversees the kitchen at the nearby Harcourt Arms, injects some interest to a well-executed run of pub classics ranging from Cotswold brie sandwiches or sourdough crumpets with smoked trout pâté to tagliatelle with rabbit ragù. The devilishly rich Double Gloucester soufflé must be shared to be conquered. Eight tastefully renovated rooms – each with its own William Morris pattern – make for a pleasant overnight stay.
