The Pheasant Hotel
North Yorkshire, Harome - Modern British - Restaurant - ££
Indulgently cosseting boutique hotel with food to match
It’s fitting that a village as pretty as Harome should be blessed with two beacons of country hospitality: the famous Star Inn and the Pheasant Hotel. A full bedroom refurbishment is planned, but otherwise nothing much has changed at the latter following a change of ownership in 2022, which is good news for anyone familiar with the roaring fires, the candlelit bar, the winged chairs and the polished oak settles. The cushions are well-plumped, the tartan throws are in place – it’s as cossetting as ever. Dining is also on track, whether it’s in the conservatory (principally used for breakfast and lunch) or the elegant dining room where the round tables are smartly dressed in crisp white linen and the chairs are comfortably upholstered. The menu is mostly British with a few contemporary flourishes: a crisp-coated smoked haddock fishcake perhaps, classically topped with a poached egg and béarnaise sauce or a rich, sweet-savoury duck parfait matched...

The menu is mostly British with a few contemporary flourishes: a crisp-coated smoked haddock fishcake perhaps, classically topped with a poached egg and béarnaise sauce or a rich, sweet-savoury duck parfait matched with an Armagnac prune jam and served with a brioche bun, ahead of venison with salsify, pear and chestnut or salmon flavoured with honey and caraway, accompanied by crab beignets and set on a fennel sauce.
Summer lunches and afternoon tea on the vine-hung terrace remain a treat, and the traditional Sunday lunch is excellent value, whether you plump for the 60-day salt-aged beef, the pork belly with an apple and black-pudding sausage roll or even the beetroot and Marmite Wellington. A comprehensive wine list has helpful explanations, plus a fair selection by the glass and carafe.

You start with a lovely restaurant, a great ambience and staff who are all knowledgeable and have a warm professional manner. The Sunday Roast is excellent value, it is served with all the accompaniments you would expect. All beautifully cooked and presented. I also tasted my husband's pork, delicious. But the beef was wonderful. As someone who loves to cook, it's great to have a Sunday roast that is better than home cooked.
