Whether you’re settled in for a late-afternoon Sunday lunch, a date night or a cosy evening session round the fireplace with a group of friends, the family-run ‘Hodd’ can deliver the goods. Readers are quick to applaud the ‘chatty hands-on owner’, the relaxed service and the food – a fulsome line-up of pub classics and more creative ideas based on carefully sourced produce. Everyone enjoys the beer-battered haddock, the short-rib burgers and the bavette steak, but those with more inquisitive palates home in on exemplary starters such as twice-baked Tunworth cheese soufflé or Moroccan-spiced Wiltshire lamb fritters. After that, baked Cornish cod and crispy king prawns with January King cabbage, coconut and shellfish bisque vies with ‘absolutely incredible’ lamb shoulder or thumpingly good chateaubriand with dripping chips. Desserts also get an emphatic thumbs-up – especially the ‘delightfully rich’ chocolate crémeux with salted caramel ice cream. Ales from the Flower Pots Brewery in Cheriton and locally distilled spirits from Gorilla in Upton Grey itself are alternatives to the creditable wine list.
