Keeping the customer and the produce in close proximity, this delightfully intimate restaurant in the old town has a charming country-rustic interior. Polly Pleasence ensures the place exudes a warm welcome, and there’s substance as well as style, thanks to Dave Hart’s classy but accessible cooking. His brief, daily changing blackboard menu is built on a classic French foundation and he does not cut corners, so expect homemade everything and a wealth of the best seasonal ingredients. Reporters have praised a host of things including a country pâté with toast and cornichons, as well as raw hand-dived scallops with a winter tomato and chive dressing among starters, and loved the strong comfort factor in a main course of confit duck leg with red cabbage and prunes. Elsewhere, there could be grilled local sea bass with fillet with rouille and bouillabaisse sauce, and for many the only dessert to have is the crème brûlée, so popular it is rarely off the menu (otherwise, you might consider chocolate marquise or some fine British cheeses). Wine-wise, there is plenty of interest, with a good by-the-glass selection.
