Sitting pretty by the banks of the river Wyre, the impressively refurbished and lavishly extended Cartford Inn has morphed from a local drinkers' haunt to a boutique hospitality complex on a grand scale – complete with an on-site deli and tearoom, an art gallery, a jewellery shop and glamorous hotel accommodation. The kitchen aims to please, buying locally and tipping its hat to the seasons – as well as to nostalgia-loving Lancastrian appetites. Black pudding doughnuts with celeriac rémoulade are a fixture, alongside more unexpected combos such as Curthwaite goat’s curd and beetroot salad with rhubarb juice. If you crave good, hearty old-fashioned meat dishes, look no further than the braised and glazed ham hock with mustard sauce or chargrilled beef skirt and heart with roasted bone marrow; if it's seafood you're after, moules-frites and mighty platters of shellfish and crustacea from the Fleetwood boats await. To conclude, consider some freshly baked madeleines with orange crème brûlée or a plate of regional cheeses. Dip into the drinks list and you will find organic, natural and orange wines, as well as a cluster of bespoke brews from Farm Yard Ales in Cockerham.
