Alexis Gauthier's playful vegan sibling
Sequestered on a quiet street just off Tottenham Court Road, on the ground floor of the British Film Institute’s Fitzrovia HQ, vegan pioneer Alexis Gauthier operates a hybrid of his fine-dining and casual ‘123V’ sushi concepts. By day, Studio Gauthier touts a colourful West Coast-style amalgam of plant-based fast-food and sushi plates, and there's a vegan bakery and café operation, too. But when dusk falls, head chef Alexia Dellaca-Minot takes charge, delivering a creative, seasonal five-course tasting menu. But when dusk falls, head chef Alexia Dellaca-Minot takes charge, delivering a creative, seasonal five-course tasting menu. Gauthier has been relentlessly exploring and embracing the innovations of the alt-meat industry since he stopped serving real meat at his Soho flagship in 2021. There’s an impressive line-up of vegan nigiri, maki rolls and prawn tempura, but the California cheeseburger deserves special mention – the juicy, coarsely ground patty possessing enough savoury depth to pique the palate, while melting vegan cheese, a fluffy bun and accompaniments all successfully mimick their meat and dairy equivalents.
The ‘Louis XV’ chocolate, hazelnut and praline dessert (named after the Monaco restaurant where Gauthier trained) is indulgent enough for you to forgive its diminutive proportions. The perfunctory list of vegan wines, most well-suited to the sushi-heavy menu, leans on European bottles, with a decent proportion available by the glass. There are also some fun cocktails to boot, all dedicated to British screen icons.
