For daytime eating, this quirky renovated shop (an offshoot of Mannion & Co, York) is hard to beat. Downstairs is an open kitchen and deli counter loaded with sausages and salami, cheeses and cakes for the afternoon tea slot. But climb the rickety staircase to the attic dining room to find daily specials chalked up – maybe sea bream with roasted salsify and a tomato and caper cassoulet topped with red pepper pesto, or beetroot on flatbread with sweet potato and harissa, houmus, feta, pistachio and zaatar. Otherwise, expect ciabattas loaded with the likes of roast belly pork, harissa mayo and gherkins, while a recent brunch brought perfectly executed eggs Benedict.
