Former Bristol Lido head chef Freddy Bird’s Westbury Park brasserie offers carefully sourced, self-assured French cooking in a relaxed atmosphere. The busy, welcoming dining room with petrol-blue banquettes, marble tables and a cornucopia of objets d’art adorning the bare brick walls is smart but fun. Service is efficient and friendly, and the long menu has something for all occasions, be it a casual bar snack of lamb chops with Dijon mustard or a special-occasion dinner for two of whole roast monkfish tail with Jersey Royals, spinach and petits pois à la française. Bird knows how to use a wood-fired grill to good effect, as with a starter of queen scallops prettily served on the half shell in pools of buttery Sauternes sauce, or a main of melting, pink slices of Pyrenean lamb with boulangère potatoes, onion purée and piquant anchoïade. Puddings, such as a wide terracotta dish of crème brûlée are big enough to share or there are perfectly kept French cheeses from La Fromagerie. The impressive wine list offers plenty of options by the glass, and also a helpful page of paired bottle suggestions for the menu’s staple dishes.
