Filipino and Colombian fusion in a Deptford railway arch
You might think you’ve stepped into the home department of Urban Outfitters when you arrive at this energetic neighbourhood venue just a stroll from Deptford station. Thick wicker bar stools, statement lampshades and lots of hanging plants suggest something rather mainstream, but the fun is never far away – judging by the big, broad smiles from staff and customers alike. A lively bar is at the heart of things (cocktails are the way to go when it comes to drinks), while the restaurant itself has bags of character. Classic arepas (savoury maize patties) are bright and bang-on for authenticity (try the chicken version with chimichurri or spiced verde jackfruit with pico de gallo), while kinilaw (a Filipino take on ceviche) is vibrant and flavoursome after that initial hit of acidity. However, our top pick was Kilig’s unapologetically peppery version of chicken adobo, perfectly tempered with a little rice on the side.
For afters, check out the Colombian buñuelos (dough balls) with dulce de leche or the curiously textured ube and cassava cheesecake. Aside from cocktails, drinks include a few wines by the glass, sherries, beers and Mission coffee.
