Janet’s Pontypridd
Rhondda, Pontypridd - Pan-Asian - Restaurant - £
It all began with a small, daytime-only venue on Pontypridd market – and then, in late 2023, founder Janet Wei shifted things up a gear by opening this much larger, licensed premises, bringing a horde of loyal fans with her. Expect dishes gleaned from across East and South East Asia, particularly the Yanbian region of China/Korea, all served in uncluttered, modern, but very pretty surroundings: the interior sports pastel colours, echoing the floral mural that spans one wall. There’s a focus on local sourcing, so key ingredients such as Welsh beef might pop up in a classic Korean bibimbap or in a plate of fried noodles with a delicious satay sauce – although we found the quantity of meat in these dishes rather stingy. That said, there's no arguing with the freshness or the vivid flavours on offer here. We also liked the springy black bao buns stuffed with tender duck in hoisin sauce, and the comforting northern Chinese pancakes with spring onions and cheese. ...

Janet's take on Korean honey chicken – boneless thighs in crispy batter with glossy honey and chilli sauce – proved a perfect main course, combining crunch, sweetness and spicy warmth. There's no dessert menu, but you won’t leave hungry. The drinks menu includes many Asian options such as rice wine, Chinese beer and teas.
