Heppni Bakeri

North Yorkshire, York - Bakery

Judging by the queues, this gorgeous addition to York’s bakery scene is another local winner. Peachy colours dominate, while a long counter displays the goods beneath spotlights and silver globe lamps; sofas and stools are provided for those who want to linger. It’s all the work of local lass, India Luck (Heppni means ‘luck’ in Old Norse, apparently), a talented young baker who can be seen toiling at the back of the shop behind a glass wall. She takes lamination (the multiple layering of butter and pastry sheets) to another level with almond croissants, pains au chocolat, cherry Bakewells and suchlike. There’s a constantly changing list of fabulous savouries such as miso, leek and Cheddar pastries too. Excellent coffee. Open from 7am.
