The sprawling site of the old Watney Combe brewery (once the largest in London) is a fitting spot for this branch of Messrs Beckett and Gott's British steakhouse chain. In Georgian times, annual steakathons were held here which were popular with the great and the good – including royalty. These days hefty slabs of well-aged, British-reared beef, including porterhouse, bone-in prime ribs, ribeyes and other cuts are priced by weight, chargrilled to order and served with a choice of sauces, sides and unmissable accompaniments such as triple-cooked chips, fried eggs, grilled bone marrow and macaroni cheese. A starter portion of Old Spot pork ribs with vinegar slaw is a good way of limbering up, but there are some excellent alternatives including simple crab on toast, roast scallops with white port and garlic butter or spiced heritage carrots with goat’s curd and buckwheat. Finish heroically with sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream or chocolate and salted caramel tart. A ...

A great-value fixed-price menu is an invaluable resource for the local crowd, and Hawksmoor’s  Sunday roasts have an enviable reputation (‘they’re the highlight of our trips to London,’ noted one fan). The group is also justly renowned for its beers and its inventive cocktail selection, as well as its list of bold meat-loving wines – although prices take no prisoners.
