Eat Vietnam
West Midlands, Birmingham - Vietnamese - Restaurant - £
On the site of a greasy spoon café (the original sign is still visible), Eat Vietnam was among the first wave of restaurants and bars to move into this upcoming ‘foodie oasis’ a few miles to the south of Birmingham city centre. Chef/owner Ming Nham was in the music/fashion business before taking to the stoves and it shows in the restaurant's cool soundtrack, buzzy vibe and hipster clientele. Here is a super-relaxed, friendly and comfortable eatery serving food that's 'easy to get excited about'. The commendably short and very reasonably priced menu (plus daily specials) could promise anything from ‘delicious’ pig’s cheek bahn mi to Marmite and peanut-butter chicken wings with a deep umami hit from the yeasty love-it-or-hate-it spread (‘not traditional but very good’). The excellent BBQ chicken noodles served with house pickles, fresh herbs and peanuts are always in demand, although the star at inspection was the BBQ pork curry: the depth and balance of the sauce was perfect ('spicy but not overbearing’), while the meat itself was succulent and nicely scorched with colour from the BBQ. The brief selection of wines is totally natural, organic and low intervention, ranging in price from £30-£45. Also check out the beers produced in collaboration with the Birmingham Brewing Company – their EVN Yuzu lager works particularly well with the food. A new terrace space is already attracting plenty of custom.
