Danclair’s Kitchen
London, Brixton - Caribbean - Restaurant - £
Brian Danclair’s ultra-hip Caribbean joint Fish, Wings & Tings has been a fixture of the Brixton Village scene for a decade, and the globetrotting chef recently added a second string to his bow in the shape of this self-styled 'Kitchen'. Squeezed in among the shops and cafés of Granville Arcade, it brings more precision and purpose to his local endeavours, with obvious nods to his Trinidadian roots and culinary travels. Elsewhere, the short menu roams from meaty chargrilled king prawns smacked with tamarind and headily spiced empanadas (made to his grandma’s recipe and served with a pot of chimichurri) to the ‘catch of the day’ and flash-griddled sirloin steak, ‘tender and full of flavour’. There are no desserts, but you can always get giddy with the house rum punch (pineapple and orange juice laced with copious quantities of Wray & Nephew).
