It can get pretty chilly on Doncaster Fish Market at the best of times, and the owners of this enterprising, self-styled 'seafood restaurant and Prosecco bar' have been known to provide their intrepid customers with blankets and hot water bottles. Meanwhle, the chefs conjure up a bucketload of sunny international flavours, and you can watch the culinary action from one of the high stools overlooking the open kitchen. Plates come in two sizes, small or large. The former might bring mini cod and squid burgers, pastrami-cured salmon with soda bread or calamari with chipotle mayo and romesco sauce; the latter could be Keralan fish curry or sea bass with bourguignon sauce. And if you just fancy a helping of plain ol’ fish and chips with mushy peas, they can cook that too. In addition, there’s a daily blackboard promising luxurious specials such as lobster thermidor. Note that the place has limited daytime opening hours (check the website) and they don’t serve puds – so treat yourself to another bottle of Peroni or an extra glass of fizz.
