Contemporary bistro food with a dressed-down approach, a family vibe and a summer terrace to boot is the offer at this Wirral branch of Gary Usher’s Elite Bistro group. From the first appetiser plate of whitebait with parsley mayo or rosemary and thyme focaccia, it's clear the kitchen means business. The main menu deals in what could be simple crowd-pleasers – goat’s cheese en croûte, crispy pig’s head with celeriac rémoulade, leek and potato soup – that soon achieve lift-off in their presentations. That goat’s cheese dish, for example, incorporates smoked garlic honey and a seasonal salad. Mains include whole market fish (dressed with brown butter, lemon, capers and parsley), and there are some tempting vegetable-based dishes such as roasted autumn squash with caramelised garlic, butter bean purée, green sauce and spicy pumpkin seeds. Otherwise, go full-on with a plate of crispy pork schnitzel and fries, a dry-aged ribeye steak...

Otherwise, go full-on with a plate of crispy pork schnitzel and fries, a dry-aged ribeye steak or featherblade of beef with the now-ubiquitous truffled Parmesan chips.

Desserts are more about chocolate, caramel and toffee than fruit, although the winter menu also finds room for honeycomb ice cream. ‘Great-value’ set menus and Sunday roasts deserve a special mention too. Standard glasses of wine start at £6.50, and cocktail sippers have a few classics to choose from.
