Armenian Taverna

Greater Manchester, Manchester - Restaurant

Manchester has kept this welcoming and surprisingly roomy basement under its hat – and under its pavements – since 1968 and it remains a local gem, known for serving up some of the best Armenian cooking in the UK. The menu spans a lot of territory, from borscht and pickled herrings to baba ganoush and tabbouleh, but it pays to home in on the authentic regional specialities: try the Yerevan take on khachapuri (hot-from-the-oven Georgian flatbread lavished with cheese and stuffed with air-dried beef) or chargrilled khorovadz (the local version of a kebab skewer). The chef lovingly bakes his own unleavened lavash, and Armenian wine is a highlight too.
